While not technically the first Mercurial to feature the Zoom airbag (the Air Zoom Mercurial was produced twenty-one years ago), Nike's enduring line of speed boots gets its first application of Air Zoom technology since its inception as the Mercurial Vapor in 2002 Given the shoe's significant evolution in terms of upper, fit and tooling, Nike turns to its midsole as the focal point for the latest and greatest from the Vapor line.

Mercury Vapor Questions Answered:

  • Is the Nike Mercurial Vapor a good option for wide feet?

You're better off with the Phantom GT or the Tiempo if you have really wide feet, along with these othersoptions. The Vapor is now more responsive and can pack a little more width. If you've tested previous Vapors and found yourself a bit tight, then you might finally find the latest Vapor that fits well.

Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski are some of the high profile names playing with the Vapor. They are joined by the likes of Vinicius Jr., Ansu Fati and Bruno Fernandes.

  • Is the vapor good?

Yes! Because of this, the Vapor is now more than two decades old and ubiquitous among both pros and casual gamers alike. We could say that it pioneered and arguably still leads the speed category in football boots.

Nine things you want to know:

  1. At around £230, it's one of the most expensive boots on the market
  2. Synthetic based with Vaporposite+ upper
  3. Directly competes with shoes like adidas X and Puma Ultra Speed
  4. Better suited to smaller sizes but now more accommodating compared to previous Vapors (more midfoot room plus the stretch from the Flyknit tongue)
  5. Goes in very easily
  6. Zoom Airbag delivers a revolutionary underfoot feel; may not live up to hyped energy return expectations, but still has a unique feelmust be experienced
  7. Tri-Star lugs have nice sharp traction
  8. Save more by opting for the Vapor over the Superfly (whose Flyknit collar, while soft and premium, isn't necessarily great value).
  9. Barefoot touch, but with less sharpness at the sting of contact

✔️ Benefits
  • Zoom Airbag is really something new in football boots
  • Fewer stitches on ball contact
  • The new Vaporposite+ works well to balance the upper's flexibility and structural integrity; also has a sticky feel to the ball grip
  • More room around the midfoot means more foot types can try the Vapor
❌ Disadvantages
  • Energy return not at the level of the last few previous vapors
  • Some may miss the traditional tight fit as the Vapor continues to tend to be more relaxed
  • Less emphasis now on straight-line acceleration, could deviate from a core vapor DNA

Boot rankings, best for…
  • narrow feet
  • winger
  • Kinder

For SR4U:

  • The Air Zoom technology in the latest Mercurial is something special; unlike anything that has been tried before
  • Durability not a problem
  • Has a running shoe flow he hasn't experienced in any other football boot; The transition from the moment of impact to the start of the foot in the next step is smooth; not so much for energy return, but more for comfort and smoothness with every step
  • The previous Vapors feels just as unremarkable as the Vapor 15 despite having fewer outsole layers
  • Maintains the anatomical feel as the Zoom Airbag sits atop the soleplate indentation
  • Tristar lugs as aggressive as the signature chevrons of previous Vapors
  • Loves the tech of the new Vaporposite+ upper; If you like the feel of the original Vaporposite, not much has changed
  • Flyknit just got stretchier
  • The shape is tailored for Mercurial but added some midfoot space
  • The unique flow and suppleness of the crotch sets the Mercurial apart from its stiff competition from the adidas X and Puma Ultra

Summary of Jay Mike's talking points:

  • One of the best on the market; seriously good
  • Job well done to balance the flexibility, responsiveness and lockdown of the upper
  • The upper now gives a bit of support due to the texture
  • Flyknit has a higher quality and softer finish
  • Doesn't get the feeling of energy return; but feels better matched to the shoe and more comfortable due to Zoom Air

Steam 15 versus Steam 14

Since the main difference lies in the outsole technology, Vapor 15 offers comfort and uniqueness in underfoot feel. However, the Vapor 14 has the benefit of the speed boost due to the snap and energy return of the Aerotrak backbone.

Both Vapors remain light, but with fewer outsole layers, the Vapor 15 becomes even lighter.

Flyknit now feels softer on the latest Vapor.

Despite the change to the Vaporposite+, both uppers offer the same suppleness after breaking in. But the raised mesh on the new material softens the sting of the barefoot feeling.

The move from Chevron to Tristar maintains aggressive traction in the new Vapor. But agility and speed in multiple directions is the new focus, with the previous Mercs and their lug configuration representing the core DNA of linear acceleration.

Vapor 15 builds on the Vapor 14's subtle change in fit and shape to accommodate the trend for more width. The boots could lay the groundwork for ridding the Vapor of its signature strapped, tight, narrow fit.

Previous Models

Officially unveiled in 2002 (albeit with a strong connection to Ronaldo's 'R9' Mercurials, which were first released in 1998), Nike unveiled its first-ever Speed-themed silo, which has since become arguably the most iconic boot of the last two decades. Normally updated every two years, Nike releases a new generation for World and European Championship tournaments.

The Vapor 14 was like an answered prayer for those looking to return to the synthetic days of the Nike Mercurials. The new Vaporposite material was thin to give you that raw, finicky feel at impact. And after a short break-in period, the material became more supple and complemented the softer Avail Q microfiber inner shoe, so that your feet always feel comfortable.
